ISHA 2023 Presidential Guest Speaker

Jimmy Bell

PhD

University of Westminster, London, United Kingdo

I joined the University of Westminster in August 2014 to create the Research Centre for Optimal Health (ReCOH). I have a long interest in health and ageing research, with especial focus on obesity and the factors that determine optimal health and accelerated ageing.
I completed my PhD at London University, in 1987, developing MR techniques to assess biological processes and went on to work as a post-doctoral researcher in metabolism and obesity. I subsequently joined the Royal Postgraduate Medical School as a Lecturer. Worked extensively on the development and application of in vivo methodologies for the study of disease development, demonstrating for the first time the importance of gene-environment interaction in obesity. Joined the MRC CSC (Imperial College London) in the mid-90', where I was appointed Professor and Group Head. The main goal of my research program was in integrating biochemical, molecular biology and MR techniques to define the influence(s) of candidate genes and specific environmental factors on optimal health and chronic diseases, particularly those associated with accelerated ageing.

Richard "Chad" Mather

MD, MBA

Duke Health, Durham NC, USA

I got an early start in sports medicine working with my father. He is a veterinarian for racehorses, and I always say I followed in my dad's footsteps - just in a different species! I was drawn to orthopaedic surgery by the importance I place on enjoying a functional, productive life. Living without pain and being able to pursue the things that bring you joy is much of the essence of life. Thus, my first question for my patients is what they do for work and for fun. My goal is to help you regain productivity and joy in your life. In addition, I have a great interest in personalized care and aligning care decisions with the goals and preferences of each individual patient. In addition, I made a deliberate decision to focus solely on hip preservation surgery to gain a deep understanding of the hip and its function and the skills to deliver the best possible outcomes to my patients.

He specializes in hip arthroscopy, treatment of Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), Developmental Dysplasia of the hips (DDH), ACL and/or PCL reconstruction, elbow arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy and ankle arthroscopy. The principles of sports medicine emphasize a comprehensive team approach in the conservative treatment of injuries with the goal of helping the patient return to a healthy state, and focuses on the prevention of new or recurrent injuries. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Uchida's specialty in arthroscopic techniques, especially hip arthroscopy, emphasizes less invasive surgery for a potentially easier and quicker recovery. These principles, initially developed for the competitive athlete, apply to all injuries whether they occur in the recreational environment, work place, or at home. He has actually performed 2000 hip arthroscopies for the past 10 years.
