POST-conference advanced practice provider (App) program

Saturday October 19th, 2024 - 8:30am - 5pm 

Overview

As part of ISHA's commitment to bringing together the whole hip preservation family, the Society will be offering a dedicated Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Program on Saturday October 19th, 2024. This specially tailored program will be led by an enthusiastic and diverse group of APPs who are passionate about hip arthroscopy and committed to advancing our field through collaboration, networking, and knowledge sharing, and will make a fantastic learning opportunity for physician assistants, senior practitioners, nurse practitioners, and other physician extenders working in hip arthroscopy.

08:30 – 10:00 AM

Section 1: Lectures/Talks on Clinical Topics (1.5 hours)
Format: 1 person lecture + 3-4 person panel discussion for each topic

1. In-depth Review of Imaging (20-30 minutes)

  • Topics
    • What imaging do I order?
    • Why/when do I order it?
    • What does it tell us?
  • Panel Discussion
    • Panelists provide insights on imaging decisions, interpretation, and clinical implications.

2. Surgical Indications/Pre-surgical Planning (30 minutes)

  • Topics
    • Guidelines for Arthroscopy vs Open procedure.
    • Referral criteria for total hip replacement (Age, Tonnis grade, Subchondral changes).
    • Considerations for BMI, smoking, CBC.
    • Revision cases: When does it make sense? What are we doing differently?
  • Panel Discussion
    • Panelists discuss their surgical indications and decision-making process.

3. Management of Extra-articular Pain (15-20 minutes)

  • Topics
    • Evaluating and addressing posterior hip pain.
    • Gluteal tendinopathy/tears management strategies.
  • Panel Discussion
    • Panelists share their experiences and treatment protocols.

4. PAO – Indications, Rehab, and Expectations (15 minutes)

  • Topics
    • Indications for PAOs
    • Rehab protocols and expected outcomes.
    • Approach for Scope + PAOs
  • Panel Discussion
    • Discussion on rehabilitation challenges and setting patient expectations.

Morning Break

10:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Section 2: Round Table Discussion on Practice Workflow/Models (2-2.5 hours)
Format: 4-5 people briefly present how they approach and manage these in their practice. Open discussion regarding best practices.

1. Practice Flow and Utilization (30-45 minutes)

  • Role within the practice.
  • Building your practice.
  • Independent clinics vs. team-based practice.
  • Working for one surgeon or multiple.

2. Pre-op Planning and Discussion (30-45 minutes)

  • Pre-op counseling.
  • Use of booklets and OR cheat sheets.
  • Post-op protocols for Open procedures and PAO.
  • Weight-bearing status and PT guidelines.
  • Return to activity and post-op meds.
  • Scheduling post-op appointments.

3. Optimizing Your Time in the OR (30 minutes)

  • Finding your niche in the OR.
  • Role of residents/fellows in the OR.
  • Collaboration with multiple APPs/swing rooms.

4. Compensation Model (30 minutes)

  • Understanding compensation structures.
  • Evaluating the efficiency of time use.

Lunch Break

1:45 – 3:15 PM

Section 3: Graft Prep Lab (1.5 hours)
Format: Lecture + Hands-on Portion

1. Graft Types Overview (30 minutes)

  • Lecture on 3-4 different graft types, pros/cons, and preparation.
  • Indications and selection criteria for each graft type.

2. Hands-on Graft Preparation (1 hour)

  • Practical lab session to prepare and handle the different grafts.

3:15 - 3:30 PM

Afternoon Break

3:30 – 5:00 PM

Section 4: Ultrasound of the Hip (1.5 hours)
Format: Lecture + Hands-on Portion

1. Ultrasound Evaluation Lecture (30 minutes)

  • Techniques for intra-articular and extra-articular evaluation.
  • Key anatomical landmarks and their clinical relevance.

2. Hands-on Ultrasound Session (1-1.5 hours)

  • Practical training on ultrasound-guided injections.
  • Focus on both intra-articular and extra-articular structures
    • Diagnostic evaluation + Therapeutic approaches

Stephen Wright, PA-C

Boston Sports and Shoulder Center, Boston MA, USA

Stephen Wright is the Physician Assistant to Dr. Thomas Wuerz, specializing in hip, knee and shoulder arthroscopy. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College, and a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Bryant University. His clinical training was completed at a variety of area hospitals, including Beth Israel Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. Prior to becoming a Physician Assistant, Stephen was previously a Medical Assistant at Boston Sports & Shoulder Center.

Nicole Anderson, PA-C

Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, Golden CO, USA

Nicole grew up in Denver, CO. She received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, where she also was a member of the alpine ski racing team. After college she moved home to Colorado and worked at the Steadman Clinic as a research and medical assistant. She then moved to New York City to complete her PA degree at Weill Cornell Medicine. She graduated this past June and is now the newest member of team Ellman. She is excited to be back home in Colorado, enjoy the outdoors, and be close to her family again.

Grey Davenport, PA-C

Washington Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Washington DC, USA

Grey joined WOSM in 2018 and brought a background in athletic training, with her prior experience as the Head Athletic Trainer for Oakdale Highschool in Frederick, MD prior to starting PA school at Campbell University. She is a North Carolina native having been raised in Rocky Mount and graduating from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Athletic Training in 2012. Grey was involved with athletic training for the football, baseball and men’s lacrosse teams while at UNC. Grey works primarily with Dr Andrew Wolff, where she sees patients in the clinic alongside him and assists in surgery as well. Her favorite part of this role is seeing her patients from the beginning of their injury all the way to the end with their successful recovery!

Alli Mack, PA-C, MS, MPH

American Hip Institute, Des Plaines IL, USA

Alli Mack is a board-certified physician associate that has been a part of the American Hip Team since 2020. She received her PA degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, currently ranked #8 in the nation by US News & World Report. She graduated with highest honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Master of Public Health and Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology. Upon graduation, Alli was named to the Senior 100 Honorary list, which recognizes the University’s most outstanding 100 graduating seniors out of a class of 10,000. She worked alongside Dr. Benjamin Domb as a PA student and completed the American Hip Institute's APP residency program. Her passion for sports medicine and hip treatment began as a karate athlete. Her research focuses on martial artists and hip pathology and has resulted in a recent publication focusing on karate athletes with FAI and labral tears. Alli has spoken at multiple conferences for APPs and orthopedic surgeons with a focus on ultrasound guided joint injections. Alli treats patients from across the country and takes pride in caring for every patient like a professional athlete.

Alexandra Wolfe, PA-C

Boston Sports and Shoulder Center, Boston MA, USA

Alexandra Wolfe earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Bryant University. Prior to joining Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, Alex worked as a physician assistant at Newton Wellesley Orthopedic Associates specializing in sports medicine and joint arthroplasty.

Barbara Wright, PA-C

Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, Golden CO, USA

Barbara was born and raised in Miami, FL. She obtained her undergraduate degree at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. She went back to Miami to complete her PA training at Barry University, and subsequently traveled to Colorado to begin practicing. Barbara has been working with Dr. Ellman since 2015.

The Main Annual Scientific Meeting Program

Attendees can purchase registration for the ISHA 2024 Post-Conference APP Program only, but are also warmly welcomed to join the main Annual Scientific Meeting Program from October 17th to 19th. Dedicated rates are available.

APPs are also invited to submit abstracts for presentation as an oral or ePoster presentation as part of the main Meeting.
