Rintje Agricola

MD, PhD

Erasmus University Medical Centre and Anna Hospital, Rotterdam, Netherlands

Clinically and scientifically, I am dedicated in identifying risk factors and optimizing treatments for hip diseases from children to elderly in a personalized way. Driven by my tremendous curiosity after my master thesis, I started my academic career as a PhD student in 2010. I studied the development of hip morphology in adolescents and the relationship between hip morphology and development of osteoarthritis. In 2015 I received my PhD ‘cum laude’. After my PhD I remained highly fascinated in doing research and continued this line of research during my clinical training in orthopaedic surgery. During this time, I was fortunate to perform fellowships in Oxford (UK), Doha (Qatar) and Melbourne (Australia). With the continuation of my research projects and with the grants received, I was able to build my own, independent and previously non-existing research line on hip morphology development and hip osteoarthritis. I was invited for >50 key note lectures, have published >80 international peer-reviewed scientific articles and participation in various international consensus meetings.

Hal Martin

DO

Independent, Dallas TX, USA

My love of the hip began as an orthopedic resident at Doctors Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Rotations at Boston Children's Hospital in 1989-90 exposed complex 3 planar pathologies about the hip addicting me this patient population. Monday night conferences in Cincinnati at the Children's Hospital confirmed a passion for the field. Following orthopedic residency, a detour home to Oklahoma for 10 years of trauma and high volume general and sports orthopedics provided an opportunity to serve as Chief of Surgery, St Marys Hospital, Enid Oklahoma and Chief of Orthopedics at Bass Hospital. The period solidified a passion for hip pathology and found me ready to pursue a long awaited a one year fellowship in hip disorders at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Active research persisted in the fields of hip anatomy, biomechanics and clinical hip examination which has proven constant over the past 20 years. The practice of hip arthroscopy was aided by 10 years time in orthopedic trauma, sports and reconstruction on a daily basis in a well established busy group providing a unique broad perspective. The past twenty years have been dedicated to education, research and complex patient service within the last 10 years serving as Medical and Research Director, Hip Preservation Center, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas Texas. This time has allowed me to work with outstanding surgeons from around the world which is the highlight of my career.

Richard "Chad" Mather

MD, MBA

Duke Health, Durham NC, USA

I got an early start in sports medicine working with my father. He is a veterinarian for racehorses, and I always say I followed in my dad's footsteps - just in a different species! I was drawn to orthopaedic surgery by the importance I place on enjoying a functional, productive life. Living without pain and being able to pursue the things that bring you joy is much of the essence of life. Thus, my first question for my patients is what they do for work and for fun. My goal is to help you regain productivity and joy in your life. In addition, I have a great interest in personalized care and aligning care decisions with the goals and preferences of each individual patient. In addition, I made a deliberate decision to focus solely on hip preservation surgery to gain a deep understanding of the hip and its function and the skills to deliver the best possible outcomes to my patients.

Steven Olson

MD

Duke University School of Medicine, Durham NC, USA

My clinical practice has evolved from a focus in trauma to now a focus in hip preservation. Practice as a  trauma surgeon taught me the importance of accurate restoration of the joint with surgical care in joint injuries. The goals of  restoring the joint anatomy, often emphasizing restoring articular surface in treatment for these injuries remains important. During my career we have lived through periods of  dramatic improvements in the treatment of articular fractures. These include significant improvements in techniques for articular reduction, treatment of cartilage injury, and design and application of implants for fracture fixation. Yet with all these advances in fracture care the incidence of arthritis after fracture – post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) has remained largely unchanged. The development of PTA following joint injury is so common that it is seen by many surgeons as an inevitable outcome of the injury in significant portions of patients. My research interests in articular injuries and PTA began with studies on the effect of fracture on joint mechanics. This led to an interest in developing an in-vivo model to understand the development of PTOA. Working with the bioengineering laboratory and the osteoarthritis biomarker core the first in-vivo model of a closed intra—articular fracture was developed. A decade of work with this model lead to the first successful proof of concept in-vivo studies showing that early inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines after injury reduces the severity of PTA that develops in the worst case scenario of no articular reduction. Now as I approach the later phase of my career my interest is in doing work in patients with hip disease. My practice has evolved into one that mixes hip arthroscopy, periacetabular osteotomy, and hip arthroplasty to improve patient care. I believe the field of Orthopaedic Surgery is on the cusp of great innovations in our field to enhance reservation of joint function.

Jonathan Schoenecker

MD, PhD

Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville TN, USA

Jonathan G. Schoenecker, MD, PhD, is the Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, Pathology and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. He is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon with a strong interest in defining the role of the vascular system in bone biology. This focus stems from his surgical training in musculoskeletal diseases in combination with basic science training in vascular and bone biology. From his observations in clinical practice combined with historical work defining vascularity in bone biology and studies conducted in his lab, he developed the hypothesis that the reason the skeleton of a child is more resilient to bone fragility and has a greater capacity to heal is due to differences of a child’s capacity to produce and maintain blood vessels. Dr. Schoenecker’s clinical research is focused on pathologic processes of bone in children with a presumed vascular etiology such as; Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, avascular necrosis, fracture non-union, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, osteosarcoma and infection induced bone necrosis. The goal of these studies is to define how changes in vascularity imposes subsequent pathology in bone biology with the long term hope of addressing the vascular insult to prevent or treat these devastating diseases in children.

Ashley Spalla

Miles4Hips, Indianapolis IN, USA

Ashley is an Army veteran with 7 years of service. She has experience in research through working in biology labs as an undergraduate and genetics research in Down’s Syndrome. She is an aspiring researcher as well as an avid endurance athlete with a love for adaptive sports (downhill skiing, wheelchair basketball, pushrim racing), playing with her Aussie shepherd, Chloe, and a semi-professional artist that specializes in 2D portraits (graphite, colored pencil, pastels) as well as typography and calligraphy. She loves spending time with friends and family, especially her nieces and nephews who have stolen her heart (Eloise, Ryker, Eva Kay, Parker, Logan and Lucas). Unfortunately, during her senior year as an undergrad she injured her hip while training in Army R.O.T.C., which lead to a diagnosis of hip dysplasia in January 2009 (age 21). At that time, education and awareness or any information on hip dysplasia was extremely minimal. She ended up having surgery, right hip PAO with scope, in June 2009, but it ultimately was performed incorrectly. It meant not being able to commission in the Army and a series of more hip surgeries followed, among other challenges. To date, she has had 26+ hip surgeries with more being planned (47 total surgeries and counting) and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Ashley’s Miles4Hips are found in adaptive sports, art and a passion for “hip” patient advocacy. She uses her hip journey as motivation to raise awareness, educate others and promote research to further the treatment and advancement in hip disorders. She plans on pursuing further medical training and education in Physician’s Assistant school. She continues to challenge herself mentally, artistically and physically, even if it means doing it from wheels.

I am physical therapist who specializes in providing pelvic therapy and women’s health care to patients. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone and gathering the courage to step into the specialty of pelvic health was initially challenging for me as a therapist. My experience is relatable for people new to these types of issues and allows me to empathize when they come in with pelvic health needs. I quickly realized how common it is for people to experience bladder, bowel, and pelvic pain issues and how they can take over your life. I love helping someone in a way they didn't know possible; pelvic health physical therapy can be life changing for many people. I love treating all pelvic floor issues and especially pelvic floor related hip pain. For people experiencing this, we can approach the issue with a team of Intermountain hip surgeons and sports medicine providers, all of us working together to get patients to the right type of healthcare provider.
